Salon?
As an artist, I’m curious about events in history that led to the development the arts as we know them today. One particular era that holds my fascination is cultural surge that took place in 1800’s France in the decade before the Fin de siècle. This decade was witness to a cultural explosion of emerging artists passionately exploring their world, debating politics and exchanging ideas. One of the major forums for this exchange was the salon;
sa·lon (sə-lŏn’, săl’ŏn’, să-lôN’) n.
1) A large room, such as a drawing room, used for receiving and entertaining guests.
2) A periodic gathering of people of social or intellectual distinction.
3) A hall or gallery for the exhibition of works of art.
